Science in the Ancient World
Science in the Ancient World, is divided into six chronological time periods: Science before Christ (570 B.C- 370 B.C.), Science Before Christ (424 B.C. - 120 B.C), Science Soon After Christ (40 A.D. - 200 A.D), Science in the Early Middle Ages (490 A.D.-1368 A.D.), Science in the Late Middle Ages (1320 A.D. - 1519 A.D.) and Science in the Early Renaissance(contributions of Leonardo DaVinci). The great discoveries of early natural philosophy and science are studied through the brilliant minds of Pythagoras, Hippocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Archimedes, Galen, Roger Bacon, and Leonardo DaVinci along with many others. Topically, students will be introduced to human anatomy, medicine, optics, sound, music, magnets, plant growth, the atmosphere, density, water flow, erosion and more.
Science in the Age of Reason
Science in the Age of Reason is the fourth book in a hands-on, multilevel elementary science series that introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. It covers the scientific works of natural philosophers from the early 1600s to the early 1800s. Because the course covers science as it was developed, it discusses a wide range of topics including astronomy, medicine, botany, zoology, chemistry, geology, human physiology, electricity, conservation laws, and weather. Students learn not only the science that was being discovered at the time, but also the beliefs of the natural philosophers who were discovering it. As a result, students can see how a person's worldview affects his or her scientific conclusions.
Because of its unique design, the course can be used by all elementary-age students. Each lesson contains an interesting hands-on activity that helps illustrate the scientific concept that is being discussed, and it concludes with three different levels of review exercises. Students do whatever review exercise matches their specific level of understanding.
Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy
This book is now in 2nd ed. and chapters include What is Astronomy, The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, The Moon, Mars, Space Rocks, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Kuiper Belt and the Dwarf Planets, and Stars, Galaxies, and Space Travel. The last few chapters are where you see a change in the chapter sequence from the first edition - chapters 11 and through 14. There are still interesting activities and projects including a model solar system made of balloons, pinhole eclipse viewing box, making a compass, understanding the moon phases, and creating an astrometer. Children are sure to remember the information they are learning between hearing the text, performing the hands-on activities, and completing the journal pages.
The text is formatted differently from first edition - it begins with an explanation of the text, activities, course website, notebooking journals, and science kit in clear bold print. Each lesson is full of new photography and illustrations and interspersed with scripture. Blue "Think about this" and "Wisdom from Above" boxes give special attention to the Creator, and orange questions are scattered throughout the lessons for students to think about and explain. Activities for each lesson include instructions and illustrations for completion. Every chapter is rounded out with "What do you Remember?" where students recall information from the lesson. The appendices include a lesson-by-lesson supply list for hands-on activities and an answer key for "What do you Remember?" questions.
Notebooking journals are now in full color and color-coordinated. A suggested schedule is in the front of each notebooking journal, but you decide how many times a week to do your curriculum. The schedule lists daily assignments (71 total), and the lists have items listed in 3 different colors - green for textbook reading assignments, blue for notebook assignments, and brown for science kit activities. Pages in the notebooking journal are formatted for students to answer questions and complete activities. A review of the inner planets now follows lesson 8, review of the outer planets follows lesson 12, and a final review follows lesson 14. "Take it Further" pages are now drawing, making lists of books you've read, movies you've watched, additional experiments you may have completed, and making scrapbooking pages. Copywork is still included and coloring pages in the junior notebooking journals. There are answer keys in the back for vocabulary crossword puzzles and final review questions.
Because of the content changes, first edition products won't work with the 2nd edition. Experiments are different (four of them are unchanged), so lab supplies do vary as well.
General Science is a big jump from elementary science. Your student will learn how to write a formal lab report, be responsible for daily reading from a big, thick textbook, take quizzes, and chapter tests. If you feel your student is ready for the next big challenge, then we can’t wait to walk alongside you for this coming year!

General Science introduces the history of science, scientific inquiry, experimentation, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, fossils, the fossil record, life, classification of life, the human body, energy, the digestive system, the respiratory system, the lymphatic system, the reproductive system, the urinary system, and the nervous system.

This course is designed to be the last science course the student takes before high school biology. Thus, we generally recommend it as an 8th grade course. However, your student can also use it for their 9th grade course work. The text discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton's Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. The author especially concentrates on the myths generated by the hysterical environmentalist movement. It is an excellent course for preparing the student to take a college-prep high school science curriculum.

This course is designed to be the student's first high school science course and is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a tough university biology course.
In addition to the $100 yearly lab supplies fee, there will also be a small monthly fee for Chemistry only. This fee will pay Janie Stewart to teach. The extra fee will be determined once we know how many students are in the class.

Discovering Design with Chemistry is a high school chemistry course designed for students who have completed Algebra 1. This independent-study, college-preparatory course covers fundamental aspects of chemistry such as the classification of matter, atomic structure, spectroscopy, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, physical change, chemical change, stoichiometry, solutions, ideal gases, acid/base chemistry, reduction/oxidation reactions, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, and chemical equilibrium. Weaving together concepts and their mathematical applications, the course teaches students how to think as a chemist so they can analyze the major changes that occur in matter.
The course contains 46 separate experiments that illustrate various concepts being explored. Many are quantitative in nature, including measuring the wavelength of microwaves, determining the number of water molecules in a hydrated compound, calculating percent yield, measuring the concentration of a hydrogen peroxide solution, determining the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar, measuring the specific heat of a metal, and determining the change in enthalpy for a chemical reaction. Others are qualitative, such as performing flame tests, examining the interference of light waves, comparing metals to nonmetals, exploring Boyle’s Law, doing litmus tests, and electroplating.
Throughout the course, the student is shown how chemistry reveals the amazing design that exists all around us. From the details of atomic structure to the makeup of the very air that we breathe, chemistry shows us the marvelous handiwork of God.
Science in the Beginning

Science in the Beginning is the first book in a hands-on, multilevel elementary science series that introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. Because each lesson is built around an activity or experiment, it is engaging for all K-6 students. In addition, there are three levels of review for each lesson, so the parent/teacher can choose the depth at which each student is expected to grasp the material. The course contains roughly 90 hours of instruction, 35 of which are composed of hands-on activities.
The beginning of history is given in the Bible's creation account, and this book uses the days of creation as a way of introducing a wide range of scientific concepts including the nature of light, energy conservation, the properties of air and water, introductory botany, our solar system, basic zoology, and some aspects of human anatomy and physiology. As the students learn about these scientific concepts, they are constantly reminded of the Creator who fashioned the marvels they are studying.
